Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy, often referred to as “OT”, is highly individualized and varies from person-to-person.
In OT, we will focus on “occupations” which are the daily tasks and activities that make up our lives; the ones that are necessary to engage in and the ones that are very meaningful to us. In OT, we will work on developing, improving and/or maintaining skills that are necessary in order to grow into individuals who can function and operate as independently and safely as possible. For children, their main occupation is to play! Through play-based interventions, your child will be able to develop their skills and explore new and/or different ways to engage with others and throughout their environments. During the evaluation process, we will learn what is important to your child and your family and determine what areas may need assistance in order to advance their skills in those specific occupations. Working with your child and family to determine what is important to you will be the driving force to helping your child develop and master skills to ensure they have opportunities for a successful life.
A glimpse into the OT process...
During the evaluation process, we will complete the necessary testing, observations and interviews with your child and family to determine if skilled OT services are recommended. If your child qualifies for services, we will work together to determine the appropriate goals and areas to be targeted in upcoming OT sessions. These areas may include but are not limited to:
-
Practicing safety awareness skills for safe transitions and outings in the child’s community, school and home settings
-
Improving fine motor coordination to engage in play tasks and ADL’s
-
Engaging in feeding experiences to learn what approaches help your child enjoy mealtimes for future growth and development
-
Exploring adaptive techniques and/or equipment to increase independence/safety in daily occupations
-
Learning and practicing self-regulation skills to improve participation and safety in daily routines
-
Exploring different sensory inputs for maximal engagement in environments and experiences
